Friday night, I was on a fun outing with friends to go see the new Guardians of the Galaxy movie. We decided to dine at the theater’s dining area, but due to the cab running late and a few other circumstances we had to grab the food and go into the movie. Normally, I don’t like eating in the auditorium, as it requires that I use one of the children’s lap trays. While I won’t comment on the ridiculous looking tray or make fun of my lack of maturity … lol … my main argument against the tray is that I face the difficult task of balancing the tray precariously on my lap while leaning in to eat, due to my inability to raise my arms up to my face while holding something. Needless to say that a time or two this has caused the tray to tip forward onto my feet. And Friday night was no exception.
I sat through the movie, which had already started by the time the food came, with ketchup and ranch dressing running onto my footrests. Fortunately, I had finished eating my entree. However, the fries were a complete loss. Due to the late arrival and the confusion, my friends were sitting in seats away from mine, leaving me unable to ask for any help. All I could do was just sit and wait until the end of the movie to address the mess.
As the ending credits rolled, I got the text that my cab had arrived. Embarrassed by the mess I left the auditorium hoping that the cab driver wouldn’t be bothered by the mess on my footrests. As I was leaving a theater staff member came up, a young kid looking to be roughly 16 or 17, and asked if he could help with the mess.
I was a bit surprised by his generosity. He told me it was no problem, and shared that his dad is quadriplegic. I thanked him profusely for his generous assistance, though I never caught his name.
So here’s to you, kind theater staff, and your generous gesture. I hope you know that gestures like this mean more than words can convey.
