Marriage – Accessible for All?

It’s great to see that the topic of allowing individuals with disabilities to remain in programs like SSI and MA has reached the White House.  Unfortunately, for many with disabilities, they depend upon expensive daily care that is solely funded by Medicaid.  However, these programs have income and financial limits that greatly restrict eligibility.  When married, though the limits are slightly increased, the spouses income is counted alongside the disabled recipients’ income,  and often makes it impossible for the recipient to remain eligible when legally married.  Owing to this, many choose to remain unwed, so as to continue receiving the necessary daily cares they require to function.
