Working For New Wheels

A few years back I set up a Independence Plan to set aside money with the goal of purchasing a van that could be adapted for me to drive.  I’ve been setting aside funds each month toward this goal.  These funds are ignored from the Medicaid earnings limits and asset limits that I’m required to stay under in order to remain eligible.  Now that I’m nearing the target amount for purchasing a new van, I’ve started planning with an vehicle adaptive equipment expert as well as the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development, who will help to pay for the adaptations.

I’ve already taken a ride in several models of minivans that are easily adapted to meet my needs.  One of the models, a Toyota, was easily the most spacious minivan I’ve ever ridden in, and easily accommodated my wheelchair, which is rather long.  And though I’ve had one adapted minivan, which broke down about a year ago, the prospect of a new van is quite exciting.

So here’s to hitting the road once again, even if just in town, until the reality of car loans and repairs hit.
