I find it humorous the number of times that people around Madison have made the statement “I’m surprised they don’t have a door assist” when helping me open a door to a restaurant or shop. Of the 5 cafes I frequent around the Capital square, not a one has a door assist. Not even the Starbucks, in spite of the large number of people going in and out each day. In fact, of all of the restaurants, diners and bars in the downtown area, there are really only less than 10 that have a door assist. Several that are not wheelchair accessible at all.
Now, I’m not faulting the generous individuals, that so graciously aid me with the door, for not knowing this. I just get a kick out of the irony that almost everyone that helps me with a door says that exact line with the same level of surprise.
For some bonus fun, here’s a list of some of the places around the Capital Square and State Street area that do have door assists:
- Chipolte Mexican Grill
- The Great Dane
- The Old Fashioned
- Starbucks (by campus)
- Wendy’s
(A neat site to see a list of accessible venues by city, and/or contribute to the list is BrettApproved.com)
