Finding a Hotel Abroad

Staying in a hotel when you use an electric wheelchair can be quite difficult.  Finding a room with the “essentials” can be difficult In August of 2013 I took a trip to Europe for two weeks with my brother Ethan.  While planning for this trip we wondered how we could find a hotel that would meet my accessibility needs: wide doors, spacious room, roll-in shower.  In the past I’ve used Hotels.com to find accessible rooms, with roll-in showers, as it’s accessibility features option is a great help.  However, as we were looking around Europe this still proved difficult.  However, we came upon a hotel Raddison Blu in Paris, and lo and behold it was accessible.  As chance would have it, there was also one in Berlin, and one in London.  I speak a little French and Ethan speaks a little German, yet we feared our speaking skills might not be up to snuff to communicate my needs.  Then I had an idea.  We called Raddison corporate.  They verified each of the hotels had a room that met my needs, handled the bookings, and also helped me to book accessible taxis from the airport in each city.  In short, when booking abroad, corporate can be quite helpful.
